How far to Walk Your Dog Per Day?

20 to 30 minutes of walk once or twice a day is sufficient for your dog each day. Besides, the walk frequency and duration vary depending on 3 factors: dog sizes, dog age and their health conditions.

1. Dog Sizes

Some large dog breeds are more energetic than others since they are hunting, sporting, and working dogs. They also require more food than couch potatoes. So, they need more than 2 hours of walk per day. These breeds include but are not limited to: Siberian Husky; Golden Retriever; Alaskan malamute; Border collie; Dalmatian; German Shephard and Labrador Retriever.
Small dog breeds are less active; still, they need daily exercise to maintain good health. About half an hour of walk per day divided into fragments of 15 minutes is enough for the little dog breeds.
Medium-sized dogs fall in the category of both high to low energy breeds and require 40 to 80 minutes of a walk per day. For example, they include Staffordshire bull terrier, Werner, English Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Basset hound, Tibetan terrier, etc.

2. Dog Age

Puppies and senior dogs usually don’t tolerate long walk sessions. They get tired early. However, young dogs (1 to 4 years) have more energy and tolerate one hour of daily activity. At the same time, medium-sized dogs (5 to 8 years) can walk comfortably alongside you unless they are healthy. But they also get tired early than younger dogs.

3. Health conditions

Short-nosed-breeds can quickly overheat if they exercise too much. It happens due to their physical features and breathing problems. So, it would be best if you kept their walk duration short. Similarly, the senior and middle-aged dogs may have health issues such as arthritis, stiff joints, diabetes, muscle atrophy, hypothyroidism, etc. Therefore, though they are eager to go on a walk, they are mostly unable to make it for a long duration.

There are long-listed benefits of the walk and physical exercise for your dog.

1. Weight Maintenance

Regular walks with your buddy help burn the fats and extra calories. So, it prevents obesity and keeps your dog in shape. Over-weight canines are prone to a lot of serious diseases, including diabetes and hypothyroidism.

2. Behavior management

Pet canines need activity to kill boredom. If they have nothing to do, they develop destructive behaviors. For example, pee in the house, biting, chewing household stuff, and scratching. In addition, they show aggression and bark for nothing. Therefore, walking your dog is the best activity to engage them. By doing this, they can positively utilize their energy and not create havoc in the house. In addition, they get an opportunity to sniff fresh air and explore the world around them.

3. Cures Sleeplessness

Young dogs are more energetic. If they don't get enough physical activity, they won't sleep through the night. So eventually, the chances are: you'll also experience sleep difficulties since your pet disrupts your sleep. That's why exploring the outdoors is crucial for the nice sleep of your pet. The more your dog tires, the more deeply it will sleep.
